Blogging! An Entrepreneurial Perspective!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

How many times you have heard that you can earn extra income through blogging? Or you can become rich through blogging. Especially in the recent bloggers meetups in Pakistan, you must have been impressed with young bloggers earning a decent amount of money through blogging. After those meetups, we have witnessed many new blogs coming up; some productive and few unproductive, hoping to earn extra revenue from it.

How many times did you think to start a blog in order to earn money? or to make it a profession; that is to make it your fulltime job/business? You might have done the research work also. Such as what blogging is, how to blog, eligibility to become a blogger etc. You might have come across with various opinions like not just any other person can become a blogger, or everybody can not earn through it, passion is required, skills are required, you gotta be intelligent and blah blah.

But wait a moment, Aren’t we forgetting the basic principle/objective of business/entrepreneurship? the sole objective is to “earn profit”. I mean what if a person has good and competent entrepreneurial skills but he is not good at writing? or as they say, he doesn’t have “passion” to write. To hell with that, let me solve your mystery. You are not good at writing, leave it, don’t write. Yes you can still become an owner of a blog without writing yourself.

Yes! don’t write, you can still take blogging as a business by hiring professional writers. They will blog for you on the topic of your choice. You earn through ads and pay your writers. And of course your entrepreneurial skills will be applied there at leading the team of writers. All you can do with a little investment.

Now below are the few FAQs you may like to consider.

1) What the initial investment is required for?

Ans: For having a blog up, i.e. hosting/domain, Search Engine Optimization etc. Also you may need to pay your writers from your own pocket until your business starts earning.

2) Will I have to have an office for me and my writers?

Ans: That’s absolutely not necessary, you can take the start from your home and your writers can also work from home.

3) Is there any risk involved? What’s the guarantee that I will start earning through Ads?

Ans: Yes! The Risk is involved, an entrepreneur should always ready for risk taking : ). And about the guarantee, it depends on the quality of the content you generate.

4) Where can I find the writers?

There are many job boards for bloggers/home based employees, out there. You can post your ads for FREE. Few of them are listed below:

a) AarpixJobs.Com

b) ProBlogger Jobs

c) BloggerJobs.biz

No Bonus! Instead, Google gives G1 to the employees!

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Google, which we know as a tech giant of todays age is also hit by the economic crises. Each Year in the holidays/christmas season, they used to give away cash bonuses upto $30,000 to its employees. But this year Google gives G1 Android phone worth $180. It was kind of a dog food for Googlers. Google is considered one of the best place to work across the world, but this year, Googlers have got disappointed.

This is the official email by Google to its Employees. Email revealed by ValleyWag:

Googlers,

The holiday bonus is a Google tradition - it’s a great way to thank everyone for their hard work. In the past, we’ve done this in cash. This year, we’ve decided to give Googlers a different kind of present - a Dream phone (this is the same device T-Mobile markets as the G1). We’re really excited about getting the phone to more Googlers in more countries, and also seeing all the cool new things you do with it.

Shipping these special edition phones in such a short time frame (they were designed especially for Googlers with a ‘droid’ on the back) and making sure they would work anywhere in the world was no small feat. So a big thank you to the Android and Legal teams for making this happen. While these phones do not have SIM cards, they are unlocked so they can be used with the network provider of your choice. Plus - thanks to more fancy footwork from the Android team - they’ll work immediately as WiFi devices!

Gizmodo has shared an interesting and anonymous conversation between the Googlers about their dream Christmas Bonus

Dude! Long URL Please!

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

You must have seen many short URL(s) everywhere on the internet. Short URL(s) promise cleans up all the shitty long URLs and transform them into clean and short URLs. Did you ever felt curious what lies behind those small and short code type URL? Ever wanted to see what it leads to? What exactly is the original source it is linking to?

Well, the problem is solved now. A Google employer initiated a startup called Long URL Please! This is basically a browser extension that can be installed within the matter of clicks. This extension works in the background when every web page loads, replacing short urls with the proper ones, so that you can tell exatly where links will take you.

Of course, this service can be used to reduce uncertainty. So you will really know where this short URL is gonna take you. You can decide there whether or not to continue clicking that URL. I found this service handy and very usefull. A good thing is that they also offer API for web apps that means this service can be implemented easily in your apps. Do check them if you’re planning to work with their service.

LongURLPlease.Com supports these short URL services so far: adjix.com, bit.ly, dwarfurl.com, ff.im, idek.net, is.gd, ln-s.net, loopt.us, ping.fm, piurl.com, piurl.com, poprl.com, qlnk.net, reallytinyurl.com, rubyurl.com, short.ie, smallr.com, snipr.com, snipurl.com, snurl.com, tinyurl.com, tr.im, twurl.nl, ub0.cc, ur1.ca, url.ie, urlx.ie, xrl.us, yep.it, zi.ma, zurl.ws

Copyrights Conflict! GateHouse sues NYTimes!

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

The Boston Globe reported yesterday that GateHouse has filed a lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing NYTimes’ newly launched Boston Global Newton website for copying content from GateHouse’s Newton’s local website Wicked Local Newton.

GateHouse claimed that Boston Global’s use of its content constitutes unfair business practices and has alleged the company of copyright infringement, trademark dissolution, unfair competition, false advertising and breach of contract.

GateHouse also blamed that NYTimes’ newly launched website YourTown Newton illegally copies contents from various news sources and blog features. They suggested that if NYTimes want to compete, they should hire their own journalists and should generate original content, rather then just illegally copying.

NYTimes’ spokeswoman stated that their website has been legally aggregated and linking to the content from various sources through RSS. She says they link back the content to their original sources. She further said that they have been doing what thousands of other websites on the internet are doing.

Now it is difficult to say that who will win because syndication or linking to content is a common practice. Google (the search giant)’s entire infrastructure is based on crawling and syndicating to the websites. Blog aggregators, news aggregators are very common; we can take an example of Google News . They syndicate the entire content from news resources.

Your opinion is important, you can express it in the comments below.
